Of central importance to the development of a good empathic social worker is that they understand their common humanity with service users and carers, this requires humility and acceptance that we are all part of the human family and not separate species. Service Users and Carers play a vital role in helping social workers appreciate and understand the great importance of this together with other issues such as vulnerability, powerlessness, stigma, discrimination and inequality. Knowing that social workers can become users and cares and vice versa helps to under score the great importance of this and through their lived experience users and carers can bring these vitally important insights and understandings in educating professionals.
